Suchitra Mitra, the outstanding singer, studied Tagore music for 5 years from 1941 at the Santiniketan University-ashram established by Tagore.
Suchitra Mitra [19th September, 1924 - 3rd January, 2011] was an Indian singer-composer, and a well respected exponent of Rabindra Sangeet or the songs of Bengal's poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore. As an academic Suchitra Mitra remained a Professor and the Head of 'Rabindra Sangeet Department' at the Rabindra Bharati University for many years.
Ms.Suchitra Mitra has also done playback singing and acted in a Bengali films as well, and for many years remained associated with IPTA.
Suchitra Mitra studied at the Scottish Church College , the University of Calcutta and at Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal, India. Suchitra Mitra has also remained the Sheriff of Kolkata in the year 2001 . After prolonged illness she died of a cardiac ailment on 3rd January, 2011, in Kolkata.
