MahaDisCom says, for the past six months the civic body is sitting on a financial assurance agreement, forcing such a drastic step.

A few days ago, the power distribution company sent a letter to the civic body, informing it of the impending action. A MahaDisCom official told Mumbai Mirror, “We charge Rs 70 lakh per annum for lighting and maintaining 800 streetlights in Kanjurmarg, Mulund and Bhandup. The population in these three areas is swelling and that has put a huge burden on supply. We had no choice but to revise our tariff structure but the BMC is yet to respond. Putting out streetlights will be an extremely painful, but necessary step.”

The official said for the past seven months, MahaDisCom officers have been trying to contact heads of various departments in the BMC but there has been no progress on the new agreement. “There has been a series of meetings. However, nobody from the civic body seems interested in hearing us out. At times, BMC officials don’t even turn up for the scheduled meetings,” he said.

On Tuesday, Manoj Kotak, the chairman of BMC’s Improvements Committee, raised the issue in the general body meeting. He told Mumbai Mirror, “We can’t let MahaDisCom disconnect power supply to streetlights. The areas will run the risk of increasing thefts and accidents.
